Patient’s Guide to Porcelain Veneers

The Magic of Porcelain Veneers

This is a case taken from our smile gallery in which Kim (actual patient) had older bondings on her teeth that needed to be replaced. With only four porcelain veneers we were able to give this her a  gorgeous smile! See more of our smiles in our Smile Gallery.

Porcelain veneers (also called porcelain laminates) are the pinnacle of Aesthetic Dentistry! With porcelain veneers, we can enhance your existing smile in many ways. Often times, Dr. Mendelsohn will uses porcelain veneers as part of the treatment plan for his smile makeover patients. Dr. Erik Mendelsohn likes to say that porcelain veneers can correct vertical and/or horizontal abnormalities of your smile. A horizontal abnormality would be a smile that is crooked or one with a lot of spaces. A vertical smile abnormality is one that the patient shows too much gums (gummy smile), or a smile that shows none because the lips do not allow for the teeth to show through.Vertical abnormalities are the hardest to correct as most dentists do not like changing ones bite in order achieve cosmetic greatness. Porcelain veneers of course will make your teeth whiter and enhance your shape, size, and contour of each individual tooth! No longer is a wonderful smile for Hollywood actors! Since porcelain veneers can correct crooked teeth or teeth with large spaces or gaps (see Instant Orthodontics) you can now avoid years of orthodontic braces! Replacing old and discolored fillings that were previously placed in a tooth with white, clean composite restorations will strengthen teeth as well as improve their appearance.

Digital Smile Design- Design Your Future Smile!

Dr. Erik Mendelsohn likes your first visit to be about designing your future smile. We use our  our SNAP Digital Smile Simulation to find a shape that looks best on you in just minutes. Smiles can vary from more square in shape to more round in shape and everything in between. We also  use a book called the Smile Catalog that helps patients choose the smile that fits best. Once we determine this smile, we have the lab do what we call a “diagnostic wax mock up.” This mock up is used to make your trial smile! Many dentists skip this step, but Erik Mendelsohn feels that planning with the end in sight is one of the key communicative ingredients to achieving your perfect smile.

The Trial Smile

Making porcelain veneers will take two major visits. The first visit is to prepare the teeth to accept the new porcelain veneers and the second major visit is to place the porcelain veneers in your mouth permanently. What’s great about this procedure is that after the first major procedure you walk away with a beautiful smile, as the temporary veneers, which we call the “trial smile,” is an exact duplicate of your final permanent veneers. The trial smile was initially designed on your previous visit in which you chose your ideal shape. If you feel the “trial smile” can be tweaked into perfection, then Dr. Erik Mendelsohn will communicate those changes to his lab. This is why we are so successful in achieving the perfect smile the first time for our patients.

Your Final Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Erik Mendelsohn with a patientUnlike the show Extreme Makeover in which the dentist gives the patient a mirror and says, “it’s time to see your new beautiful smile,” you will actually see the veneers before they are permanently cemented. The “trial smile” is removed and the new permanent porcelain veneers are placed in your mouth with “try-in gel” underneath. This enables you to see the final smile before it is permanently cemented. If we feel that the smile can still be improved, we can place the “trial smile” back on until the lab makes the changes that we request. The porcelain veneers are bonded into place which strengthens your existing teeth and helps keep your teeth healthy. This process usually takes 2–3 hours depending on how many teeth are being placed.

Dr. Erik Mendelsohn is  proud of the beautiful smiles that he is able to create with porcelain veneers. If you are interested in learning more about “instant orthodontics” or other cosmetic dentistry procedures such as dental bonding, full mouth rejuvenation, or dental implants, contact Dr. Mendelsohn’s  dental practice today to schedule a consultation.

Porcelain Veneers

One of the greatest advances in cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers restore youth and beauty to your smile.  The veneer, a very thin and extremely strong porcelain facing, is bonded to the front of your natural tooth. This requires a very minimal amount of tooth preparation and veneers are one of the most conservative dental restorations available.Veneers give us the ability to change the shape of your teeth, correct chips or fractures and heavy staining. Veneers are superior to tooth bonding, once used to correct these types of problems. Bonding is less effective and doesn’t last as long.Veneers have also gained popularity as an alternative to braces in straightening one’s teeth. Braces often require 1-3 years of treatment. Veneers are an excellent option if you are hesitant to go into braces but want a straighter, whiter smile. If you are looking to improve your smile, beautiful, custom-fitted veneers can provide the answer. Be sure to contact our office conveniently located in Egg Harbor Township for a free consultation.

What  are veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made moldings that cover the fronts of unsightly teeth. They are crafted from tooth-colored, high-tech materials to portray a natural, bright smile. Since veneers are individually sculpted for each patient, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth.Custom-made veneers resist stains from coffee, tea and cigarette smoke because they are made of high-tech, extremely polish-able materials.

Should You Consider Veneers?

Veneers provide an alternative to traditional crowns. They cover unattractive gaps, and can mask stained, misshaped or crooked teeth. If these conditions apply to your mouth, veneers may be your best option.

How Long Will Veneers Last?

Veneers are intended to last for many years. Unlike most bonding materials, veneers will not change color over time. You should consult with Dr. Erik Mendelsohn to find out exactly how long veneers will last in your mouth.

How Are Veneers Applied?

The tooth is reshaped initially to allow for the added thickness of the veneer. A molded image is taken of the reshaped tooth and sent to a dental laboratory where the veneer is custom-made to fit your mouth. The veneer is applied with adhesive material which bonds it to the original tooth structure.

Advantages of Veneers

  • Tooth-Like Appearance
  • Stain-Resistant
  • Minimally invasive

Benefits of Veneers

  • A minimal amount of the natural tooth is altered to fit the veneer.
  • Veneers can be matched to make even the darkest teeth appear to be bright white.
  • Minor twists and overlaps, as well as small gaps, can be quickly corrected through the use of veneers.

Maintaining Your Veneers

Brush and Floss Regularly to Prevent Oral Hygiene Problems.

  • Veneers generally cannot be damaged by abrasion from your toothbrush or floss.
  • Good oral hygiene will ensure your veneers stay strong and provide you with a long-lasting, attractive smile.

Keep In Mind

When considering veneers, keep in mind these important points before undergoing the treatment.

Non-Reversible Procedure

Because a small amount of tooth is reduced to fit the veneers, the process is NOT reversible.

Strength of Veneers

Veneers provide more strength when crushing an object than twisting or tearing. Therefore, just as with natural teeth, patients with veneers are advised to avoid opening nut shells, chewing on bones or any other matter that may cause the veneers to chip or crack.
